Practice How You Hunt
There are tons of videos going around about doing cold shots or elevating your heart rate then taking a few shots... even holding at full draw for a minute then taking a shot. One thing that I managed to overlook that nearly cost me a deer is shooting at last light. It's crazy how different your sight picture is in low light conditions, especially when you're running a smaller scope housing or lenses. My tidbit of advice for the 2024 season is to practice those low light shots because we all know that's the most likely time when you'll have an opportunity to make a shot that counts 👊

I like to practice the hold then shoot. The way I do it is to find a TABATA timer app for your phone, or any timer that can time multiple a duration. With a Tabata, I draw and hold for the 20 secs, then release and reload/redraw in the 10 seconds. The hold becomes cumbersome. You lose your shot process because you're either at the aim portion or just before the aim portion. When it comes to the release you either have to restart the process or kick off where you left off. This year I may even incorporate longer holds to let my ADHD brain wander further only for the timer to go off, and set me back into reality. Much like hearing a crunch crunch, drawing, then having the animal held up behind the bush for 30 seconds, take one step out and present an opportunity that lasts a fleeting second. Maybe something to pair with the last light training? 🤔
